7 Catherine Truman Architects Cambridge, MA ABOVE: When our clients purchased the property, the Barn was a hodgepodge of storage spaces, garage, and workshop, connected to the main house by a convoluted walkway. The renovated barn provides a large social space and sleeping loft above. The concrete floor, cable rail steel stair, and oversized windows provide a modern contrast to the antique timber f rame and walls. The sliding barn door leads back into the main house. The Barn and attached Farmhouse are net-zero energy, with solar panels, super-insulated walls, and triple-glazed windows. This project won Best in Massachusetts f rom the 2019 International Interior Design Association, a 2020 Recipient of a Residential Design Award Citation f rom the Boston Society of Architects and the AIA NY. Photographs by Jane Messinger FACING PAGE: Before our renovation, this 17th century farmhouse was a maze of small, low-ceilinged rooms. To maintain the historic character while introducing a modern feel, we removed a portion of the second floor, transforming the family room to an airy two-story space. The kitchen was moved to the old dining room and opened to the vaulted roof. Original wood floors in both areas were carefully numbered, removed, and reinstalled; the concrete floor beyond marks the new connector containing a mudroom and laundry, as well as Barn and garage access.
