9 Sustainable Homes ABOVE & FACING PAGE TOP: My firm designed and master planned this project, where we demolished and recycled the existing house and site. The homeowner had two main priorities: an energy-efficient home and a yard conducive to entertaining. With that in mind, we designed the new structure, interior architecture, built-in furniture, landscaping, berms, and pools. We created four distinct zones using CMU "green cavity" garden walls: the entry meadow and courtyard, the house with backyard outdoor living area and landscaping, the native zone with oak trees and a bocce ball court, and the "hidden" pool and accessory dwelling unit. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: The home's floorplan is open and spacious with glass-closure systems receding into walls to create indoor-outdoor living spaces. The house opens up to the backyard firepit sitting area, outdoors canopy dining, and barbecue area—making the entire home an ideal setting for family gatherings and parties. Some of the sustainable design elements include low-water plant forms, recycled building materials, solar panels, water conservation, FSC-certified wood, and exceeding all California energy code requirements.
