ABOVE: The Shining Mountain Lodge is a first-class retreat for families and groups located on a 4,500-
acre working cattle ranch. The design inspiration for this dining and leisure guest lodge comes f rom
a Japanese aesthetic, where larger building materials are used at the base and taper toward the roof.
The structure is highly crafted with influences f rom the National Parks rustic style and the Arts & Crafts
movement. The design has a dual personality: heavy and fortress-like with indigenous moss rock splayed
walls and small windows on the north side and full-height glass windows extending onto verandas on the
south side for solar gain and views.
FACING PAGE: Free of stacked logs like most log buildings, the lodge uses post-and-beam log construction
using "fire killed" lodgepole pine logs. Double hips were created at the roofs, another unique feature not
previously seen in other log structures. We also included a contemporary take on a fire tower for the
home, which was a specific request f rom the client. The Swiss chalet-inspired inglenook fireplace has
ergonomic stone seats designed f rom the proportions of a 735 BMW seat.
