20 Inspired Outdoor Living ABOVE: Pool proportions can make or break a design and it's always best to avoid building a pool with a width that's more than half the total length of a pool. A leaner design makes for a more graceful effect overall. The long pool built along a hillside drop off required substantial structural engineering to ensure it didn't literally fall off the side of the hill, and it is heated by a passive solar power system. FACING PAGE TOP: Specially designed urns accent the pool and are completely hands-off. Waterproofed on the inside, the urns automatically water plants when needed and include a self-draining feature that makes landscaping hassle free. They're also lit from the inside, providing an artful touch once the sun goes down. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: Special glass tile, custom sleek waterfalls, and a passive solar system make the pool beautiful and eco-friendly. The beach interior made with custom crushed abalone adds another natural element to the pool, which is surrounded by all on-drip landscaping that requires little maintenance. The adjacent pavilion includes a barbecue and fire pit and a built-in kitchen specifically for the space. Photographs courtesy of Watermark by the J Rigo Group, Inc.
