81 ABOVE: A custom steel fire feature floats above the pool coping at the back of the pool. Strips of synthetic turf divide pads of acid-finish colored concrete, to create a seating area around the fire. Barstools in the swimming pool and the adjacent table area are shaded by a flat roof structure. The graphic design in laser-cut steel panels creates a modern shadow as the sun moves throughout the day. TOP RIGHT: The cantilevered flat roof structures and the breeze block backdrop wall lend just the right touch of midcentury modern in this renovation project. A custom-made Sputnik-style chandelier hangs from the center of the open oculus in the main roof, while concentric circles of Tejas crushed granite and Mexican beach pebble appear almost as its shadow. RIGHT: Two-tone flooring sets a unique mood in this modern Zen outdoor living space. Composite wood decking, laid running away from you as you walk through the back door of the home, widens the feel of this narrow space by leading the eye through the covered patio to the feature wall at the back. Porcelain pavers comprise the remaining floor and run to the edge of the water. Custom laser-cut panels overhead extend shade and echo the LED-lit panels in the feature wall. The coffee table is custom-designed and fabricated by Randy Angell Designs, and features cypress wood inlaid in the concrete top. The fireplace hearth is elongated, stretching the length of the pool, terminating into the vertical water feature wall and further emphasizing the connection between water and shelter.
