229 ABOVE: This perennial garden includes native assorted colors and textures. In between the two gardens is a tumbled bluestone walkway that we custom-designed. A "half-moon" curve leads from the front yard to the backyard, following the same arch as the existing window. I love to incorporate the existing architecture of a building into similar curves, arcs, and textures in my landscape designs. RIGHT: I created this pond with my own hands and placed each of the rocks, with all stones collected from local beaches or recycled from other jobs. The large stone was added when my dear grandmother passed, as I wanted to have a place to remember her; it creates a bridge from one side to the other. A classic Buddha sits atop the main waterfall in the background while the koi in the pond have become part of my family—I've trained them to come out of the water and onto my hands to eat. They are so smart; they know when I walk by and follow me for more food. FACING PAGE TOP: I designed this new outdoor space with all nature-made, custom-handcrafted materials, including the patio stone that was selected in partnership with the client. It's a limestone called Dark Irish that has a surface unlike any other, with tiny circles that give such a fabulous feel for your feet—I wish everyone could enjoy it! A split-level step-down leads to the fire pit on the water. FACING PAGE BOT TOM LEFT: For a homeowner who wanted a custom outdoor design, I created a sunken blue stone patio for her backyard furniture. I love to work with natural stone throughout our projects to amplify the timeless effect. Granite stone steps were added to all entrances, connecting the front and back of the home to the land. For another creative texture, I added peach pea stone for the walkways. To further enhance the space, I transplanted existing plants and added more festive plantings to optimize proportion, color, and texture. FACING PAGE BOT TOM RIGHT: This property was an open slate to design a comfortable seating area and fire pit for family and guests, overlooking Cape Cod Bay. The homeowners and I collaborated on every element, including this bluestone patio, pea-stone border, and boulders for retaining walls. I added dark blue river stones for more texture and flair.
