8 Inspired Outdoor Living LEFT: An antique well pump from the client's father's farm in Illinois was recycled to this project and became a water feature. We surrounded it with a lush, colorful array of perennials and annuals. ABOVE: This is no ordinary flowerbed! We elevated this Chicago-area client's garden to deliver maximum pizzazz with a strategically layered mix of plant textures, shapes, and colors. For example, the Annabelle hydrangeas help shield the fence and are great all-season shrubs. The chartreuse of the lady's mantle softens the garden's edges and offers repeat blooms. Repetition in the garden helps create harmony and is pleasing to the eye — here, upright grasses echo the smooth vase shape of the water fountain. Every planting bed spirals out from the central water feature and complements the adjacent bed — inspired by the arrondissements of Paris. The mix of square and rectangular Wisconsin limestone is fied to just the right curve for the pathway that invites curiosity around every bend. FACING PAGE TOP: Who knew a walkway could be so lovely?! We created this one, which leads to the front entrance of the property, in collaboration with the homeowner, interior designer Michele Thomure. There is so much intentionality in the duo-tone design, which reflects the façade of the home, and the bright flowers were specifically selected to lend radiance to this path. FACING PAGE BOT TOM: Colorful mixed plants and flowers adds vibrancy while softening the edges of the brick. Just beyond is a rectangular pool with multiple seating zones for lounging, dining, and entertaining.
