On the River Bend
E
xpression of structure takes on a unique meaning with a residence built at the bend of a river. The home's
dynamic exterior, set on an unexpected axis, creates multiple vantage points of the marshland and river,
while capitalizing on what the narrow Kiawah Island lot has to offer. Walking in the front door, one is immediately
presented with a U-shaped cutout in the wall that allows the captivating view of the U-shaped bend in the river
to be seen from the entry. The pairing was coincidental but serves as an example of Marc's innate ability to
integrate nature into every home's design.
To the right of the entry, the Great Room offers a full, expansive view of the river through three pairs
of windows and a set of French doors. To the left, a hexagon-shaped screened porch, complete with
fireplace, provides a space for year-round entertainment. The beautiful trusses in the Great Room are
reminiscent of late-1800s English churches.
Outside, the disappearing-edge pool appears to flow into the river itself, and the grill hut doubles as a
pool cabana for outdoor entertainment. The home is a beautiful example of the honesty in architecture
that defines Marc's workâstructural elements like the trusses in the Great Room and the beams in the
screened porch are parts of the structure of the home itself, rather than an element added on after the
building was completed.
