Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out
Saratoga South
I
nspired by the rustic grandeur of Adirondack architecture, these owners asked Camens
Architectural Group to introduce elements of the iconic mountain lodge into their new residence.
Here, the two-story central Great Room is the heart of this home and offers a refined, island-
appropriate evolution of lodge styling. Painted trusses lend a soft elegance to the room and bring a
sense of comforting structure while visually breaking up the voluminous space. Three arched balcony
bays also provide visual cues that define the space from the first level. Upstairs, one finds a beautiful
nod to symmetry in the landing. Second-story dormers, which are perfectly aligned to the balcony,
flood the entire space with light from top to bottom.
The northern-facing view of this home's site affords a beautiful luminosity, as it's always lit by the
southern sun without the harshness of direct exposure. This is the viewpath that Marc started with,
bringing the light and the view inside. The only room that's not dancing with light in this home is
the brick wine cellar, designed in the storied tradition of the wine cave for the owners' impressive
collection.
