Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out
L
oaded with elegant details, this Kiawah Island home's most notable feature is perhaps the white-
on-white color scheme. From the molding three-quarters of the way up the wall in the dining
room to the coffered ceilings in the living room and the beams in the kitchen, each detail becomes a
silhouette of style, blending in with the rest of the room but offering texture and depth that enhances
each space.
Working with a difficult site—the walk-up to the front door had to be shifted to make a comfortable
approach to the entry—Marc designed and built each room to capitalize on the natural light. A gentle
arch meets you as you enter the front porch. Once inside, the crisp palette and refined embellishments
in the dining room greet guests and set the tone for the entire design. The adjacent kitchen is both
comfortable and sophisticated with a central island, marble countertops, and dark hardwood floors.
The stair tower, hidden from outside, allows for ample natural light to flood two levels at once through a
series of windows. The stairway seems to effortlessly connect the entry level and the one above, creating
a flowing sense of harmony throughout. As the light bounces around each room, subtle shadows create
more sense of depth on the white-on-white treatment. Out back, a long porch leads to a screened
room complete with an outdoor fireplace and an overhead fan—it's the perfect place to enjoy the view
throughout the year.
