Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out
Redefined Beach Home
W
ith a love for the beach but a deep appreciation of a finely detailed residence, the owners
asked Marc to design and build their family home. True to the island's aesthetic, the home
is built on a reverse floor plan and boasts a view of the golf course and ocean drive beyond. The
site dictated the orientation of the home, and capturing the views was the priority during the design
phase.
As you enter the home through the foyer, the eye is drawn up the staircase that leads to the living
spaces above. Light filters in from above through large clerestory windows. White paneling mingles with
the dark wood finishes up the staircase to impart it with timeless elegance. In true Camens fashion, you
can catch a peek of the living room above before taking the first step up the staircase.
Full of surprises, the home includes a secret room behind the fireplace in the living room. Like something
out of Old Hollywood spy thrillers, the secret room is revealed with the pull of a book in the bookcase.
In the kitchen, there is a back staircase that leads to the private master suite with its own balcony. The
staircase's placement was decided upon to suit the owners' habits and lifestyle—the kitchen is a hub of
activity and the true heart of this home. Outside, a small screened porch provides protected outdoor
living throughout the year, while the custom deck and infinity-edge pool are perfect in the warmer
months.
