Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out
Great Camp Meets Island Living
H
aving worked extensively in the Adirondacks before relocating to the Coastal Carolinas, Marc
is well-known for translating elements of the Great Camp style to southern island living. And
that's exactly the inspiration he used for this magnificent craftsman estate built for a family who was
making a permanent move from their prior home in New York City.
The owners spent many summers in the Adirondacks, so they wanted to create the same kind of
reminiscent, camp-style compound to accommodate several generations of family and guests. The
keystone of this concept is giving everyone private spaces to recharge while providing a variety of
casual gathering areas and activity zones throughout the property.
Here, the primary structure contains the main public areas for living, eating, and communing. A series
of trussed ceilings offers a sense of rustic structure and geometry against the easy elegance of the
Great Room while delineating the living space from the dining space. There are separate wings for the
bedrooms, and a traditional carriage building is connected via a covered walkway above the porch. It
houses the garages and a second-floor guest suite.
Outside living is fully maximized with covered decks and balconies throughout, all opening onto the
resort-style pool and a boardwalk leading to a separate guest house. The end result is a retreat-like
property that feels like a year-round vacation.
