80 Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out Tudor Tradition Meets Kiawah Charm N orth meets south in this magnificent home that was inspired by the owners' Pittsburgh roots. Not only did they want a home that integrated elements of Tudor style into their new coastal address, but it was also important that everyone in their blended family had their own bedroom, bathroom, and living space. When they couldn't find what they were looking for in Kiawah Island's existing homes, they came to Camens Architectural Group to build their dream property. To wrap the home around this family's lifestyle, Marc prioritized both public entertaining areas as well as private wings for everyone to have their own space. He then sculpted the exteriors with a Tudor influence, including steeply pitched roofs and peaked arches, melding it with the island's shingle-style aesthetic. While steel and exposed brick were integral to this design, there is nothing industrial about this home. Instead, it exudes rustic elegance and old-world charm with an organic, unified flow between the interior and exterior that's accomplished through repeated materials and intentional detailing. Ceiling- defining wood beams delineate the living room, kitchen, and sitting nook while the Adirondack- inspired outdoor living space features structural trusses to add dimension without sacrificing the stunning views of the pool deck and the Kiawah River beyond. A private office on the third floor has one of the most encompassing views. KIAWAH ISLAND, SC
