From Dated to Dynamic
S
ometimes the creation of a custom dream home doesn't always
start from the ground up. The owners of this property wanted
Camens Architectural Group to comprehensively upgrade the dated
quality of their '90s-era home while still respecting the integrity
of the original structure that aligned with the spirit of the storied
neighborhood.
Within the older framework, both interior and exterior were
radically transformed to create a modern, current space that was
unrecognizable from its past. Working from the inside out, Marc
collaborated extensively with the owners to reimagine the previously
compartmentalized rooms into a new, open floor plan that was
centered around the grand Great Room.
Inspired by the cathedrals of Europe, Marc added three repeated
ceiling trusses that a phenomenal local craftsman built from reclaimed
barnwood. These exquisite ceiling details played an important role in
the renovation to create a sense of structural integrity and beautiful
texture while visually carving out the vaulted main living area from
the barrel-framed kitchen. The owners' large, rough-hewn dining table
serves as a transition point.
For the exterior elevation, the roofline was transformed with curved
detailing in the front. Dormer windows were carved in for aesthetic
form as well as function, as they permit even more light to flood into
the interiors. A fully new outdoor living area and pool celebrates the
tree-lined Kiawah site overlooking a pond.
With this renovation, Camens Architectural Group invoked a sense of depth
and storied magnificence that felt inherent to the home's original era—only
better—for a home that has a whole new lease on life..
