Informal, Comfortable Beach Home
I
t's always a compliment when owners fall so in love with their vacation home that they sell their
primary residence and move into it full-time. Such was the case with this informal, comfortable
beach home owned by a couple originally from Long Island. Loaded with Southern charm, the home
stands out in the Camens portfolio for two reasons. The first is it is the first home on Kiawah Island
to feature horizontal shiplap, seen so well in the living room. The second notable factor is that one
enters the room on the same level as the main living spaces.
Exquisite wood floors lead into the beamed living room with a quaint brick fireplace and ample space
for multiple seating options, including a bay window that looks out on the lagoon. The half-bricked
kitchen—a décor idea from the owner, who is an interior designer herself—gives one the sense that
they've been transported to a rustic kitchen in a centuries-old building. Reclaimed wood elements are
featured throughout the house, giving it a very organic feel.
The tasteful design then continues outside. The owner picked all the colors and finishes, including a
copper roof and copper gutters. Everywhere one looks, there are fine details and little surprises. A
screened porch, situated just off the dining room, includes a gas grill as well as enough seating for the
owners and several guests.
