Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out
Big Volume and Bunk Rooms
A
simple but elegant stairway leads to the front door of this shingle-style home with a big living
room, quirky touches, and the bunk room of every kid's dreams. Upon entering, one steps
almost immediately into the Great Room with its two-story volume, internal and external dormers, and
a balcony overlooking it. Unique details, such as the built-ins flanking the fireplace, are a tribute to
the owners' bold taste, which Marc used as a guide for the overall design.
The orange dining room features ample natural light and a large transition to the kitchen beyond with
its roomy breakfast counter. Custom cabinetry provides extensive storage for the large family, and large
windows in the kitchen keep the room connected to nature. Just beyond the kitchen sits an "outdoor
room" with comfortable seating and panoramic views.
Small details, like an art niche in the stairwell, symmetry between the external and internal dormers and
balcony, and meticulous masonry, make this home truly special. Upstairs, the custom bunk room with
built-in storage, a large window, and geometric ceilings provides space for guests and grandkids. Out-
side, a huge pool deck awaits with plenty of seating in the shade or the sun.
