252 Rethinking Architecture: From the Inside Out Arts and Cras with a Twist T he owners of this home had several goals in mind when they came to Camens Architectural Group. Having retired and relocated from the New England area, they wanted a relaxing haven that referenced traditional architecture while taking full advantage of Kiawah Island's beautiful oceanfront setting. They also wanted to create a separate apartment for their son that still felt connected to the main home. From the outside, the stately residence nods to Arts and Crafts style while, inside, the modern, open layout and vaulted ceilings tap into fresh, airy elegance. To maximize the views, Marc implemented a reverse floor plan, locating the main living areas on the upper level. An Adirondack lodge-style living room is a light-filled oasis with dormers and white-washed beams. The space flows into the kitchen and dining area, with each zone delineated by statement ceiling details. All these spaces are oriented to point to the windows, thus ensuring uninterrupted lines of sight across to the marsh and the water beyond. Likewise, the climate-controlled patio off the main living area acts as another primary entertaining space that celebrates the indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Above the four-car garage is the family apartment, accessed via a passageway from the house's rectangular structure— truly making this a home sweet home that's uniquely designed for its family-focused owners.
