8 INSPIRED KITCKENS & BATHS Mirror, mirror, on the wall… I'm going to let you in on a little designer secret: Mirrors don't just serve a utilitarian purpose. When used properly, they hold the capacity to transform a space f rom top to bottom. This is especially the case in a bathroom or powder room, where mirrors are practical — and powerful. When used strategically, they can visually expand a space, amplify its natural light, cast intriguing reflections, add drama, and even f rame views. All that to say, there's a lot to consider when channeling the transformative quality of the mirror — and there are no one-size-fits-all rules here. So much depends on your lifestyle, your style, and your space. And it starts with selecting the appropriate size and shape to achieve the desired effect. A simple rule is the bigger the mirror, the brighter and larger the space will feel. Mirrors can also double as an incredible and artistic focal point — even in a bathroom. Case in point? The custom mirror-on-mirror design we created for a client that featured 4-inch by 8-inch mirrors, hand-cut on site, topped by stunning Venetian mirrors. But it doesn't have to be ornate or insanely outside-the-box to pop; even the most streamlined, simple designs can make an impact. As your designer, I'm here to encourage you to think outside the basic builder-grade, wall- to-wall bathroom mirror for something a bit more unexpected that's uniquely personalized to your aesthetic. Maybe that's a distinctively shaped mirror in your primary bathroom suite or a group of smaller-sized mirrors in a guest bath. The only rule of thumb for mirrors in your bathroom design? The piece should scale properly for the space — which means it almost always should be the same size or narrower than your vanity, countertop, or pedestal sink. Beyond that, there is a world of design possibilities to reflect on.
