4 Inspired West Coast Homes The story of the Ridge Line Residence is one of client resilience and trans- formation. Originally occupied by a 1980s dwelling, the property, along with all the clients' belongings, fell victim to the devastating wild fires of 2018. Approximately one year following the tragedy, the homeown- ers enlisted the services of (fer) studio to reimagine the property as a contemporary homesite that would not only optimize the site's inherent opportunities but also offer innovative solutions to its constraints. Nestled on a hillside, the site presented a number of challenges while also offering a commanding 270-degree mountainous sunset view. The house's primary configuration as a semi two-story linear floor plan imagi- natively flows along the hillside, tracing the contours of the site. Guests arrive by ascending the driveway and are greeted by an exterior arrival courtyard shaped by the distinctive angles of the house as it conforms to the hillside and the pre-existing expansive retaining wall. On the op- posite side of the house, spacious patio serves as an elongated outdoor living and dining area, offering breathtaking views of the evening sunset. Fundamentally, the architectural design, envisaged as a unified architec- tural encounter between site and structure (form and environment), was tailored to help transform the homeowner's unique lifestyle, encompass- ing musical pursuits, culinary endeavors, and meditative practices.
