The previous kitchen in this custom Manitoulin Island log home had never been completed, so the space was a clean slate. To maximize functionality, we based the layout on
a simple galley style with two sections of cabinets and appliances running in parallel. Our first step was to select the appliances to build a foundation around — and we also
decided early on to use a portion of the space behind the kitchen as a pantry. To create a balanced look, the access to the pantry room was concealed behind what appears
to be a full-height cabinet on the opposite end of the refrigerator that mirrors its same size. It was no small feat to fit in all the required fixtures and appliances to maximize
functionality while staying true to the home's architectural elements, balance, and symmetry. Everything, including the lighting and ventilation, was strategically placed between
beams that divided the space in both directions. Likewise, we snugged the island in between columns to maintain balance and symmetry. Designing large spaces can often be
just as challenging as small spaces to still maintain functionality and beautiful aesthetics. Creating this kitchen to fit the grandeur of this chalet-style log home was a lot of fun
with beautiful results.
