6 INSPIRED KITCHENS & BATHS The shower is the ultimate haven within a bathroom. As such, there are important things to consider that go beyond the aesthetic elements that may first come to mind like layout and shape, tile design and type, plumbing finishes, and shower doors. Time and again — no matter how amazing a custom shower is — there are three elements we commonly see overlooked. Let's dive into each of them. 1. A handheld spray can easily be incorporated into any shower experience, yet it so often isn't. We like to incorporate sprayers that are mounted on a pole with an adjustable bracket. This allows you to lower the spray to avoid getting your hair wet, position the water directly on your back, or heat or cool a targeted area. It is also much easier to clean the shower or wash a pet or child if there is a sprayer! They are available in a variety of sizes, styles, and spray configurations. We prefer a multi-function model with soft sprinkle and massage jet options. 2. Storage for shampoo, hair treatments, razors, soaps, and loofahs is necessary in a shower and should be planned for accordingly. A ledge or a shelf can do the trick, but we also love using a recessed niche to maximize space because these niches can also provide a beautiful design element with contrasting accent tile. 3. Safety elements should include grab bars, non-slip material for flooring, and a bench — particularly in larger showers! In addition to being a necessity if someone wants to sit while showering (especially in a steam shower), it's a great place to rest a toe while shaving. In smaller showers, we often plan a ledge or recessed toe niche specifically for this purpose. Benches can match the vanity counters or they can be made of the same shower material — generally marble or tile. With advance planning, they can be installed as cantilevered or built-in units — or sometimes we even use f ree-standing options like a teak stool or ceramic garden bench. It's such a pet peeve to visit a custom home with many luxury features, yet the showers have no seats — and they only have a single shower head with a cheap rack hung over the shower arm to store products. Remember: Your dream, spa-inspired shower can be as functional as it is beautiful with a little advice and advanced planning!
