116 The secret to designing a sleek, modern farmhouse kitchen that's oriented toward family and entertaining is to infuse it with elements that add warmth, like these engineered white oak floors. For this space, the homeowner also desired a clean, clutter- free, and symmetrical design, which we achieved with a bookend layout that balances appliances, cabinets, windows, and doors. A mirrored stainless-steel range and hood coordinate with the lighting and mirrored appliance doors. Shaker-style cabinets and plain drawers offer simple lines. Graphic light and dark elements — including the oversized, counter-to-ceiling subway tile with dark grout and dark window cladding — are softened by honed granite counters. The 12.5-foot island is topped with veined quartz to mimic Carrara marble but offer more durability. This home has a true eat-in kitchen with no formal dining room; the dining table stretches along the three French doors looking out to the upper deck with glass panels for an unobstructed pool and pond view.
