Our overall vision for this "organic modern" kitchen in Denver was a slightly edgy space that still offered a warm, inviting feel. I like to push people out of their comfort zones, and
we've done that here with ebony and matte-grey cabinets as well as the unique alchemy of mixed metals and contrasting materials. I also wanted to demonstrate that a black
kitchen can be functional and dramatic — and not the dark cave everyone fears! To soften the black, we incorporated organic elements like natural woods, handmade emerald
subway tiles installed vertically, and brass — not to mention functional yet beautiful fabrics. The extended island provides both ample prep space and adequate seating for the
family to gather, with additional space available in the comfortable nook area. The wood slat dividers are a nod to midcentury modern style, creating a delineation from the dining
room while still allowing light to permeate through.
