331 Your weekend spa getaway can be right in the comfort of your own home when you design a primary bath that prioritizes wellness. Personalization and customization are key, as is implementing materials and features that promote health. Here are my top five tips for creating a spa at home. 1. A steam shower for the win! Add chromotherapy, aromatherapy, and music therapy if you are so inclined. Steam provides a host of health benefits and can reduce stress, increase circulation and blood flow, clear respiratory congestion, improve skin texture, and more. 2. Implement American Clay wall and ceiling treatments for a Zen-like vibe. In addition to exuding beauty, texture and warmth, this natural earth plaster releases negative ions into the air, which increases our serotonin levels and helps alleviate stress while energizing the spirit. It's also ideal for bathrooms because it helps regulate humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture naturally. 3. Sleek soaker tubs — be they f reestanding or built-in — are a must for a relaxing and restorative space. Bonus points for adding radiant-heat flooring to keep your feet warm and toasty, so that your body retains heat longer when you emerge f rom that long bath. 4. Consider the details. A blend of warm tones, calming colors, and organic materials will contribute to the wellness-promoting space, as will adding houseplants that purify the air — like snake plants — and f resh flowers, like a gorgeous Phalaenopsis orchid. Also: Upgrade to luxe towels and a towel warmer. I cannot begin to tell you how much you'll enjoy heated towels on those cold winter mornings! 5. Paying attention to our light intake is so important for our circadian rhythm. Ensuring that windows in your bathroom are bringing in natural light during the day while incorporating overlapping, dimmable light sources for the evenings can help provide an appropriately energizing or restful environment, depending on the time of day. With these tips, you can create a space that inspires all the beauty and wellness and that is perfectly tailored to you.
