306 To become exceptional, a bathroom must be well-illuminated. I am about to share with you my secrets for designing the most beautiful, well-lit bathroom of your dreams. The process I follow consists of making a specific, detailed plan for lighting — right after selecting a theme for the bathroom. Next, I like to assess the amount of natural light the bathroom has and mix it with new light fixtures that help me tell a story in each bathroom. Remember, a well-designed bathroom is one with multiple layers of light versus just one source. The first layer illuminates the whole bathroom; designers call it ambient lighting. Bathe all walls with beautiful, warm light. I love using recessed lights; put them on a dimmer in case you opt to take a warm bath at night before retiring to bed. Chandeliers and sconces also flood the space with light and are considered part of this layer. An important source of ambient lighting is natural light; windows and skylights are excellent sources. This layer will bring out colors chosen for the walls and will also make the bathroom feel larger, clean, and inviting — like your own personal spa. The second layer of lighting consists of lights to aid in performing tasks such as grooming or applying makeup. The light needs to be directed toward the area where you are performing said tasks. These are vanity lights, sconces, pendant lights, and new self-light mirrors. These lights should be flattering and LED, as these do not emit heat and are very durable. This is the layer that makes a well-designed bathroom a functional piece of art. The third layer highlights special accents, materials, art, and other carefully curated elements that will make your bathroom special and inviting. These brighter lights can be redirected into the exact angle that makes objects shine and add a sense of luxury and quality to your bathroom. Candlelight is an additional warm, beautiful source of light that increases your sense of relaxation. Finally, have fun and choose light fixtures that represent your unique style!
