2 INSPIRED KITCKENS & BATHS When a family's 110-year-old barn and stables on their New Jersey property were repurposed as the ultimate entertaining space, called the "tavern," we were delighted when our clients asked for our help. The "tavern kitchen" was designed to support large gatherings of family and friends while also accommodating chef-led cooking demos during more intimate parties. The existing barn structure had stone walls, Douglas fir wainscoting, window and door casing, and metal accents throughout. Our goal was to connect the kitchen to the larger surrounding space through open shelving, a limestone backsplash, handmade metal shelf brackets, and a custom steel hood. The client wanted a tall wine refrigerator to be a focal point, so we placed it underneath an awkward soffit, which made it look more purposeful. In addition, quartz countertops -- designed to look like concrete - coordinated nicely with the polished concrete floors. To maximize space, we used the three accessible sides of the island as storage for pots and pans, cutlery, and more. We also took advantage of the perimeter, adding a hard-working sink by The Galley and maximizing efficiency with the creative placement of cooking utensils, dishware, and serving pieces to make up for the limited cabinet space.
