Architect A.V. Macan's subtle insistence on accuracy and strategy is elegantly
demonstrated at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club's 16th hole. On most modern
layouts, a par 4 of less than 400 yards is an invitation to hit the driver as hard and long
as possible. At Shaughnessy, Macan gives pros and recreational players alike cause
to pause and think about club selection, whether from the red tees at 314 yards or
from the championship tees at 372 yards.
The hole slightly turns to the right, but at that gentle corner 100 yards from the green
two fairway bunkers on the right and one on the left pinch the landing area. The
narrowness of the opening between the bunkers encourages most players to lay up,
ideally leaving about a 130-yard second shot.
Even from that range, the second shot into the 16th is challenging. The green is
elongated and slopes front to back and to the left at the narrow front. The pin position
is key to club selection—the left front is especially difficult to hold—and a pot bunker
front right, a large bunker back right, and another front left protect the green well.
The hole is straightforward. Macan puts it all out front and lets you decide how to take
up the challenge.
