Tucked away in the Kootenay Rockies, within the limits of the town of Cranbrook, the
region's hub, is a special course just waiting to surprise. Mature trees maintain a lush
parkland feel throughout a course that has something to offer every golfer, regardless
of skill level or experience. Cranbrook Golf Club, a "player's course" in the fullest
sense, was designed by its members. Over the past 20 years, it has been recognized
for excellence within the golf community and selected to host numerous provincial
and national championships. From grassroots beginnings—members with rakes and
shovels—to a national standing as a respected and challenging course, Cranbrook's
story has been a remarkable journey.
The 17th hole provides a good glimpse into the character of the course. At 195
yards, this can be an easy three or rapidly turn into a double bogey. The layout is
fairly straightforward, relatively flat with a little increase in elevation from the front to
the rear of the green.
You'll want to be on target here; water guards the left side of the green, with a
substantial bunker on the right. Pin placement is absolutely key in determining your
club selection. When the pin is placed in the left rear quadrant of the green, stretching
to place your tee shot close to the pin has you flirting with the water. Taking a more
conservative approach will leave you with a long, fairly challenging putt.
Simple par 3 indeed! Coming near the end of your day, losing concentration here can
turn a good round into a disappointing round in no time at all.
