Great par 5s are always defined by the options they present. Multiple hazards, long
distances, intimidating turns, and unpredictable winds are just a few challenges that
enhance the play. These are what keep experienced players challenged and what
help newcomers to the sport improve.
At 550 yards, the sixth hole at Lynx Ridge Golf Club is certainly one of these par 5s.
Its length makes it reachable for the longest of hitters and playable for those who
focus less on distance and more on accuracy. A saddle-shaped, sloping fairway—a
test in and of itself—greets you as you line up your tee shot. Well-struck tee shots will
reach the crest of the hill and beyond, presenting a multitude of favourable, playable
routes to get to the hole.
The longest hitters can try for the green in two if they dare—and only if they are
confident in their ability to hit the target. Those laying up will need to avoid the ponds
on each side of the fairway to stay out of trouble, which is certainly doable if accuracy
is carefully attended to. The green itself is elevated and often calls for at least one
extra club, regardless of skill level.
This is a true risk/reward par 5, which invites you to let loose and let a tee shot fly if
you're willing to gamble on your talent. There is, however, enough length and enough
trouble to make par difficult, if not impossible, from off the fairway, so choose your
shots wisely and be prepared to accept the consequences.
