The setting is so natural and the surroundings so spectacular that while walking the
lush fairways it is difficult to remember that Redwood Meadows Golf & Country Club
is just a 20-minute drive from the bustling urban center of Calgary. Along the banks
of the Elbow River, on the edge of the Foothills with views of the towering Alberta
Rockies, the Tsuu T'ina Nation owns and operates one of the most beautiful and
challenging courses in the country.
Renowned architect Bill Newis and Canadian golf legend Stan Leonard masterfully
blended the 7,238-yard layout into the pristine terrain, opening the front nine in 1976
and the back in 1978. Tracing the river and the undulations of the meadowlands
through the stands of poplar and spruce trees, Redwood is as memorable as it
is playable.
Crystal-clear Rocky Mountain water is in play on seven holes and never more
dramatically than on the 14th. A slight dogleg left and a true three-shot par 5, the hole
has seven slightly elevated tee boxes and plays from 442 yards all the way back to
556 yards. With the Elbow River flowing along the entire right side of the hole, and a
large pond pinching the landing area on the left, a tee shot in the fairway between
the water hazards is ideal. The layup second shot must stay right of the creek and
ponds along the left side, leaving a short iron into a small green that is well-protected
by a rock-edged pond in front of the green. Scenic and strategic, the 14th is a classic
par 5.
