Nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Lee Creek
Valley Golf Course—located just 14 miles north of the US border—is one of Alberta's
most scenic and spectacular golf courses. Designed by celebrated architect Les
Furber in 2005, the 6,782-yard layout traces the valley floor that gives the course
its name, with Lee Creek and three ponds enhancing the setting. The 3,900-foot
elevation provides incomparable mountain and valley views, and helps players carry
their shots over the water, like the pond that defines the beautiful fourth hole.
One of four par 3s at the par-71 course, the fourth reflects the natural setting and
plays from 90 yards all the way back to 189 yards. Like many of the tee boxes, the
back tees are elevated with the foothills gently rising behind them. From these tees
players look through a chute of stately cottonwoods and poplars over the pond to a
green flanked by tall trees and smaller pines.
The putting surface is large—two club lengths deep—and undulating, the front
sloping back toward the apron. There are no bunkers, and a berm running along the
back of the green can act as a backstop for shots that carry too far. The raised area
is well placed since the prevailing wind is from behind. Once past the hole's "wow"
effect, golfers can focus on playing this excellent par 3.
