29 NoRTHLANDS Golf Course PAR 5 531 yARDS North Vancouver, BC 604.924.2950 www.golfnorthlands.com As much as any of the holes at Northlands Golf Course, the fourth demonstrates Les Furber's accomplishments in retaining the natural attributes of the site and using them to enrich the golfing experience. The green is a favourite grazing area for deer, so have a camera handy. The fourth is a 531-yard uphill par 5, possessing the greatest handicap on the entire course. A solid tee shot is very important. Few players have the distance required to hit the green in two, so plan on three solid shots to get there. On your second shot, aim for the waterfall for a great angle to the green. The refreshing mist drifting off the signature waterfall is an added bonus on warm summer days. Take note of the pin placement on the narrow oblong green, which is well bunkered and 45 yards from front to back. The green's three-level organization makes club selection the key to scoring well. Any shot landing above the hole will create a great deal of tentativeness because you can easily be looking at a long return putt—the greens are fast and true. A side hill putt is always tricky and on the mountainous course's fourth hole you can expect severe breaks. Keep it below the hole and on the correct tier for a chance at par. Consider yourself a pro if you birdie this monster. 4 Photograph by Pablo Su
