Quilchena Golf and Country Club takes its name from a First Nations word meaning
"running water," "sweet water," or "many waters." Located snugly on the south arm of
the Fraser River estuary, the course experiences a links-style wind challenge on many
rounds. In keeping with the name, water plays a prominent role on this challenging
par-5 hole with a pond guarding the right front and side of the green.
The second par 5 on the front nine, this hole is a dogleg left with tall, mature trees
lining both sides. A fairway bunker on the right guides players around the corner,
but a sober appraisal of the golfer's hitting power is very necessary. Only the longest
hitters will have a chance to carry the water hazard and reach the green in two.
The spectacular hole offers great risk/reward, but a lay up in front of the water
guarding the approach to the green is a good, safe strategy. Deliberate placement of
tee and second shots takes precedence over raw power for most players, assuring
a more predictable play.
Whether golfers are looking for a few casual holes in the evening, a championship
round, or to play with a regular foursome for a few bucks, this course delivers all that
could be desired—and then some.
