On the north shore of the South Thompson River, in the picturesque Thompson-
Okanagan region near Kamloops, the legendary Robert Trent Jones created what is
generally considered his finest links-style golf course. On broad, rolling bench land
at the base of a range of rocky hills, Rivershore Estates and Golf Links lies amid the
sagebrush and remnants of oxbow lakes. Since opening in 1981, the course has won
awards, hosted numerous amateur and professional championships, and earned the
acclaim of golfers from around the world.
The signature Jones design elements—long rectangular tee boxes, large bunkers,
and big greens—are prevalent throughout Rivershore, with its 95 bunkers and water
in play on five holes. The first hole to feature water is the eighth, a fairly short par 5
of 537 yards. The hole runs arrow-straight with out of bounds all along the left side.
A large bunker complex protects that side of the landing area, while trees, fescue,
sage, and other indigenous flora border the right side of the fairway.
An old oxbow lake guards both the lay-up area and most of the front of the green that
is very wide but extremely shallow and sloped aggressively from back to front. The
middle of the green is set lower than the left and right sides rather like an inverted
saddle. Bunkers guard those portions of the green not already protected by water.
The eighth is a classic par 5 on one of Jones' finest courses.
