65 KoKANEE SPRINGS Resort Club PAR 4 400 yARDS Crawford Bay, BC 800.979.7999 www.kokaneesprings.com Renowned architect Norman Woods created a timeless layout back in 1968 at Kokanee Springs Resort Club that, with a recent multimillion-dollar refurbishment, not only stands the test of time but also improves with each passing season. The 14th hole, a par 4, is a classic example of the deft Woods touch as natural beauty plays a key role in its charm and challenge. Called "The Peninsula" for the way the tee juts out into a pond, the 14th demands strategy from each of the four tee boxes. From the back tees at 400 yards, and from the 371-yard blues and the 358-yard whites, the first shot must carry the pond. The reds are to the left and past the water hazard. However, from each tee, the challenge is the same—place the tee shot to set up a safe approach to the green. Majestic 200-year-old cedars guard both sides of the narrow entrance, making second shots from right or left daunting. Two large bunkers protect the front of the long, thin green that deceptively runs back to front. A distinctive rock wall lines the front right bunker, edging the eminently playable sand blended specifically for the 66 bunkers on the course. The Hazel May Basin forms a lush backdrop to the tall cedars ringing the green, typical of the astounding views—including the Kokanee Glacier—throughout this 6,604-yard gem. 14 Photograph by Don Weixl
