The mound that cradles the 10th green runs the entire length of the Rivershore
Estates and Golf Links property and cuts across the 16th fairway, providing architect
Robert Trent Jones with a wonderful design element. The lake that protects the front
of the 10th green curls behind the mound to front the 16th green but is not visible from
the tee. As he does throughout Rivershore, at the 388-yard 16th Jones encourages
thoughtful and strategic golf.
The fairway is lined by fescue and sage, giving the par 4 a links feel, enhanced when
wind blows across the hole from the left or the right. Tee shots should be played short
of ledges created by the mound—ideally just under 240 yards from the tips—or the
second shot will be off a severe downhill lie. A subtle challenge is the optical illusion
from the fairway. It appears that the green is considerably below the fairway and so
many players hit at least one less club. However, the green is barely six feet lower,
resulting in numerous shots finding the lake.
The putting surface slopes back to front and is guarded by bunkers on both sides.
The front of the green is just five steps from the water, making front pin positions very
intimidating. Yet shots hit long to avoid the lake encounter a significant downslope
toward that water. Jones created a classic short par 4 at the 16th.
