Mirroring and blending with its expansive surroundings, The Club at Sagebrush offers
a transcendent golf experience as timeless as the game itself.
On a stunning 389-acre site within the historic, 100,000-acre Quilchena Ranch in
British Columbia's scenic Nicola Valley is one of the most distinctive and unique
golf courses anywhere. Evoking the game's cherished heritage, co-designers Rod
Whitman, Richard Zokol, and Armen Suny created a masterpiece, the first in Canada
to boast modern minimalist style that plays the way golf is meant to be played—firm
and fast. Paying homage to the game's roots, there are no rakes in the bunkers or
markers on the tee boxes; the player with the honour decides the group's teeing spot,
and rather than a par, holes are assigned a Standard Scratch Score (SSS).
The notorious ninth hole measures 254 yards from its most forward tee to 442 yards for
the most advanced players, and has an SSS of 4. Sagebrush's rugged natural beauty
is on full display at this slightly uphill straightway hole, Nicola Lake shimmering in the
background. The mound left of the fairway and the huge, rough-hewn bunker on the
right narrow the landing area at 220 yards. Hitting a driver is enticing but risky. A lay
up to short iron range is much wiser as the enourmous green—fully 17,000 square
feet—features dramatic undulations that horseshoe around a bunker on the left. The
hole simply requires keen awareness, intuition, creativity, and a love of the game:
essential elements of a round at Sagebrush.
