One of the most alluring and enjoyable features of a great golf course is a driveable
par 4. The 13th hole at The Club at Sagebrush is a classic example. Since opening
day in 2009, very few golfers have stood on any of the four tee boxes and looked
down toward the large green—178 yards from the most forward tee, 320 from the
championship tee—and not reached for their driver.
Inspired by the world-renowned par-4 10th at Riviera Country Club, the 13th at
Sagebrush irresistibly invites players to test their ability to drive the green perched
behind a massive bunker. The wide-open corridor to the left, bounded by the forested
hillside, makes going for it enticing while simultaneously demanding that the well-
executed tee shots must come perilously close to the course's boundary to gain the
best angle to the hole. Perfectly struck drives to the slope in front of the trees will
bound toward the green, perhaps even reach it.
On the other hand, the more defensive tee shots to the expansive area on the right
force players to deal with a very tricky second shot over the ominous bunker to a
green sloping away from them to the back. The lip of this ancient-looking hazard
guarding almost the entire front of the green increases in height and complexity the
further right the player finds his or her line of play.
Beautiful, exciting, driveable—the 13th at Sagebrush yields many eagles, birdies,
and pars, and lots of others.
