97 SHAuGHNESSy Golf and Country Club PAR 4 421 yARDS Vancouver, BC 604.266.4141 www.shaughnessy.org The iconic A.V. Macan masterpiece opened in 1960 and has been considered one of the game's finest courses ever since. On 162 acres of gently rolling parkland leased from the Musqueam Band, Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club traces the edge of the Fraser River defined by more than 150 species of trees, some firs and cedars more than 200 years old. The club itself celebrated its centenary in 2011, and the 7,010-yard course has hosted three Canadian Open championships. Because of Macan's classic design of tree-lined narrow fairways, well-placed bunkers, and small greens, accuracy—not length—is the key to playing well at Shaughnessy. A par 4, the ninth hole is a fine example of Macan's art. The tee shot is slightly uphill on the gentle dogleg left. In the landing area, the fairway bottlenecks 270 yards off the back tees, narrowed by a fairway bunker on the right and tall sequoia on the left. In the 2011 Canadian Open, the game's finest players hit tee shots short of the narrowing, leaving themselves second shots of just under 200 yards. The Fraser River and Georgia Strait in the distance come into view near the green that is guarded by a large bunker on the right stretching almost the length of the putting surface, and a smaller bunker front left. Unfelt wind off the river, the slight elevation, and slope of the green front-to-back make par a fine score for both professionals and amateurs—just as Macan planned it. 9 Photograph by Margaret Barr
