A short par 4 is one of the most exciting and challenging types of holes in the game.
Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club's 14th hole is one of the finest examples.
Architect A.V. Macan built in an ingenious variety of elements to create a classic risk/
reward test.
From all five tee boxes—the championship tee is at 315 yards, the red tee at 287
yards—you have two options: Attempt to drive the green, getting the ball as close to
the green as possible, or lay up to your ideal distance for a second shot. The risk in
attempting to drive the green is that the fairway is very narrow in front of the green,
only about 12 paces wide. And the green, which slopes front to back, is well protected
by bunkers on both sides. The putting surface itself is narrow, with a ridge making it
almost two-tiered; it's difficult to hold pitch shots if drives miss left or right. During the
2005 and 2011 Canadian Opens, the majority of the pros went for the green.
If you lay up and hit a tee shot of 180 to 200 yards, you have to land in the left-center
of the fairway. Be wary of tall trees on the right side 70 yards from the green and two
fairway bunkers on the left side. You can make a birdie, but don't be surprised if you
make bogey.
