Certain holes provide a special opportunity that ardent golfers
seek, a chance to walk that fine line between success and
disaster. Talking Rock Golf Course & Quaaout Lodge's course
architects Cooke and Carleton made sure that the relatively short
14th delivers on that promise. Strike the right note and it offers
a real chance for birdies, but don't be fooled; it can certainly be
challenging. Errant shots easily land you in trouble, with double
bogeys a very real possibility.
With its slight dogleg right and an uphill approach to a narrow
green, the hole looks simple to play from the tee box. A fairway
wood or long iron here is the smart play. Three bunkers lining the
left side of the fairway await any ball that overshoots the mark on
the dogleg. Finding the fairway is crucial to setting up an uphill
approach shot to the green that is divided by a center ridge. If
the flag is to the front, be wary of the sloping hillside just short of
the fringe. Playing a little more club on this hole is ideal, as short
shots will face a difficult up and down.
Stands of pine and fir with a mountain vista backing the green
make you feel as if you are alone in a private forest clearing. Not
just a treat for the eye, hole 14 is a pleasure to play as well, no
matter your handicap.
