Canadian course designer Russ Olson used the apparent simplicity of clear sightlines
on Sandpiper Golf Resort's 177-yard 16th hole to create an intense mental challenge.
From the tee, players can clearly see the green. There are no bunkers, so what's the
problem? Well, clearly in the golfer's field of vision—inescapable, in fact—is a water
hazard running almost the entire length of the fairway and green on the left side. The
size of this body of water is nothing less than intimidating.
On the right side of this medium-length par 3, you're faced with the Harrison River,
where wind gusts will capture the occasional tee shot. Also be sure to factor in the
green, which measures only 19 yards wide and 37 yards deep. A miss left and you
have found the water; a miss right and you'll find yourself with a difficult chip up to the
green with the water hazard waiting just on the other side. Watch the wind direction,
club well for the elevated green, and go for it. Birdies are a possibility.
All things considered, number 16 is a beauty of a hole. It is a treat to look at and a
thrill to play.
