The final hole at this private club, founded in 1957, forces players
to keep their heads in the game as they approach the clubhouse
for the potential rewards and settlement of friendly wagers.
A long sweeping dogleg, number 18 presents particular
challenges. The elevation is tricky, as the fairway starts off level
from the tee then slopes downhill to the green. What's more,
hazards are in play for the entire hole. All along the right side,
trees and rough will punish errant shots while a long fairway
bunker defines the left corner of the dogleg.
A generous landing area off the tee might make it tempting to go
for the green in two—especially after a perfect first shot—but be
careful. Water guards the full left side of the green on the second
shot as well as the width of the green's front, with bunkers to the
front left and rear right. Players frequently display a tendency to
go long on the third shot, but this makes for a difficult chip to a
downhill sloping green.
Combining length with technical challenge, the final hole presents
players with a good test to close the round. Play it well and go
to the clubhouse with a well-earned sense of satisfaction. The
alternative: a vivid reminder of just how demanding Canyon
Meadows Golf & Country Club can be.
