The Desert Blume Golf Club course climbs down into the Seven
Persons Creek coulée and rises back out of the valley with holes
playing up and downhill. A fine example is the 16th hole, with tee
boxes that are more than 50 feet above the creek, a pond, and
a rock wall that must be carried to reach the fairway. After the
exhilarating first shot on this par 4 that measures from 228 yards
up to a robust 420 yards, it's all uphill.
The fairway doglegs slightly left, but the creek runs the length of
the hole on that side and 100 feet below the fairway. That is why
the hole is aptly known as "Cliff Hanger." The angle of the tee
shot is based on bravery. A tee shot to the left side will shorten
the approach, while one to the right is the safest option. A large
fairway bunker on the right will catch any shot that is played too
safely. Playing into the prevailing wind, and uphill, shots into the
green require at least an extra club.
Two tiers wait on the 39-yard-deep putting surface. The bunker
on the right is in the mid-back area of the green and ready to
catch the shots of those who took too much extra club. The
thrilling Cliff Hanger is the fourth handicap hole helping the
6,879-yard layout earn its 142 slope and 73.7 rating.
