Former PGA Tour professional Mark McCumber and Mike Beebe & Associates have
sculpted a masterpiece with the private Edmonton Petroleum Golf and Country Club,
a 6,967-yard, par-72 championship course that truly captures the scenic nature of
Northern Alberta and illustrates impeccable conditions.
The 11th's relatively short length may appear to be a relief, but it is a true test of skill.
From the tee, the golfer is presented with a fairway that hugs the lateral water along
the entire right side; an errant shot left and the ball will surely find the bunkers or
fescue of this gradual dogleg right. A driver may be an option, but a fairway wood or
hybrid should ensure your ball lands on the short grass.
When the wind is blowing, which is often the case, you must be especially cautious.
A south wind allows a long hitter to get near or on the green, but the water extends
threateningly all the way to the green's edge.
The approach shot from the fairway will be short with little room for error on the angled,
narrow green. Hit long and you'll find yourself facing a difficult downhill bunker shot
with water as a backstop. Hit too short and you'll be digging your ball out of the water.
On the quick, bentgrass green, everything slopes toward the water. Ideally you need
to have an uphill putt, as speed control will provide an opportunity for birdie. Here,
though, par will still allow you to leave with head held high.
