The private Cottonwood Golf and Country Club, nestled in the stunning Bow Valley
a short drive from Calgary, is the inspiration of the Lyle Edwards family and once the
site of Lawnie's Tree Farm. Many of the original plantings are still evident throughout
the beautifully designed and maintained course.
Upon entrance to the property along the right side of the roadway, a majestic row of
Swedish columnar aspens is your guide to the clubhouse, and on the left is your first
view of the course's signature hole: the par-3 12th "island green."
From any of the five sets of tees, this hole is often described as breathtaking,
especially with the ever-changing Alberta skies enhancing the beauty of the
surrounding landscape as far as the eye can see.
If the magnificence of the hole is not enough to distract you, the prevailing winds
from the south certainly might, so the focus should be on proper club selection
with as much as a two- or three-club variance in attempt to hit the green. The hole
is well bunkered, and errant shots require finesse to reach the green and have any
opportunity for par.
Ranked as one of Calgary's most attractive and walkable courses and host to
national and regional championships, the 6,900-yard course gives everyone a new
perspective to the challenges and splendor of the game as well as lasting memories
for those players fortunate enough to play the "Wood."
