The finale at Black Mountain Golf Club in Kelowna is known as
the "grip it and rip it" hole. Architect Wayne Carleton tops off
the club's theme of fun golf with the welcoming par-5 18th that
leaves most players smiling. Most of the trouble is along the left
side, so tee shots down the right side on this hole that measures
from 501 yards down to 429 yards set up a chance to reach the
green in two.
But they don't give away birdies or eagles, even at Black
Mountain. Carleton had some fun placing 11 bunkers on 18; the
three down the left, four on the right, and four guarding the green
bring the course total to 66. A deep gulley runs along the entire
left side of the hole. Shots into the gulley call for a reload.
Laying up and hitting a short iron into the green is always a
wise option. The bunkers at the green are well-placed, with pot
bunkers on either side and larger traps at the front right and
back left. One of the biggest greens on the course, it is slightly
elevated, two-tiered, and slopes away in the back left. The 18th
is a fitting end to a fun round.
