With views from the plateau of the surrounding peaks and the Columbia River below,
it is not surprising that the residents of the picturesque Kootenay Rockies city of
Castlegar chose this site to build themselves a golf course. Since Castlegar Golf
Club's first nine holes opened in the early 1960s, the now 6,712-yard 18-hole layout
has matured into one of the province's most beautiful courses. With a rating of 71.8
and slope of 125, Castlegar is welcoming to all players and has tested the best by
hosting the BC Seniors and BC Amateur Championships.
Because each hole was designed by a group of club members, the course is full of
unique charms and challenges, offering wonderful variety. The par-5 second hole is
typical of Castlegar: immaculately conditioned, possessing a character all its own.
From the downhill second hole's four tee boxes, which stretch it from 452 yards to a
robust 512 yards, Red Mountain and the Rockies are in full view.
Long ball hitters have to worry about two waste bunkers that guard the right side of
the fairway. The green slopes from the back to the front and is well protected by a
tree on the left and a difficult bunker on the right. Second or third shots that go past
the green leave a tough downhill chip. Be wary of pin placements in the right front
portion of the green where putts can be very quick. Most players are very pleased
with a par here, Casltegar's number one handicap hole.
