Island greens present one of the most exciting, and fun, shots
in golf. Most of them around the world are on par 3s. Architect
Wayne Carleton created something a little different and very
special at Black Mountain Golf Club. The stunningly beautiful
fifth hole features an island green, but this terrific hole is a par 4.
The challenge off the tee is to hit a drive that will leave a second
shot that can be stopped on the island. Water traces the right
side before cutting across at the end of the fairway, making
left centre the best target. The 150-yard marker is a very good
aiming point but be aware that the ball carries farther at Black
Mountain's elevation. There is a pot bunker on the water's edge,
90 yards from the hazard-riddled green.
While water surrounds it, the green is also guarded by a large
bunker front right and a smaller one behind the putting surface.
However, the green is large and receptive as it slopes back to
front—Carleton's way of keeping this one of the most challenging,
unique, and exciting holes on the course.
