On the mountainside above the city of Oliver, better known as the wine capital of
Canada, Fairview Mountain Golf Club commands majestic views of the spectacular
Okanagan Valley. Formed in 1925, the club has gracefully evolved into one of the
country's top-rated courses. Les Furber designed the current 18-hole, 7,025-yard
layout in 1990 with wide fairways and challenging green complexes. All the scenic
and pure golf aspects of Fairview Mountain are on display on the 18th hole.
From the elevated tee box more than 70 feet above the fairway on the 468-yard
hole, the valley stretches into the distance past the rows of grapevines of the winery
Fairview Cellars. Like all the other holes at Fairview Mountain, no houses are in
sight, simply the natural beauty of the Okanagan. There is almost always some wind
blowing, from either the left or right, adding to the challenge. When it's from the left,
the out-of-bounds stakes along the right side get your attention from the back tees
and all the way up to the forward tees at 425 yards.
The ideal tee shot is about 250 yards with a slight right-to-left ball flight, leaving a mid-
iron to 8-iron into a well-protected green. A long bunker traces the entire left side and
curls around the back, and a smaller bunker guards the right. A spine runs through
the middle of the green, creating two tiers on this challenging and fitting finale to an
exceptional course.
